Chai Yem Voon

Chai Yem Voon, majoring in flute performance, was awarded a four-year-scholarship to obtain her Bachelor (Hons) in Classical Music from UCSI University. Later on, she was offered a grant and obtained her Master’s degree from University Putra Malaysia. Her thesis aims at exploring the way of approaching western flute, Chinese dizi, and Indian bansuri, their cultural context, performance practice, and transmission methods in Kuala Lumpur. This is to understand the three different social and cultural contexts as well as their mutual perpetuation as part of a multi-layered culture.

Yem Voon is a versatile flautist who playing music of various genres. She has enthusiastically performed with different orchestras in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang as well as East Malaysia. In October year 2016, she has toured with Penang Symphony Orchestra to Xiamen, China. Together with Zephyr Flute Ensemble, she was invited to perform in ‘2015 International Wind Band Festival’ in Taiwan. The flute ensemble performs regularly and has worked with Roberto Alvarez (Assistant Principal of Singapore Symphony Orchestra) and Koh Yew Kia (former flute principal of Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan). She has also played for musicals such as Sinbad the Musical (2014) and Into the Woods (2016). In year 2017, she was invited to play the flute and piccolo part in the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra– World Tour– Kuala Lumpur. The show has successfully attracted a huge crowd of video game lovers.

Besides, Yem Voon obtained her Post Graduate of Diploma in Education (PGDE) in year 2019. She is a passionate flute teacher teaching in Fairview International School of Kuala Lumpur. With the insight of International Baccalaureate curriculum, she aims to groom her learners to be a holistic global citizen. In the mean time, she is also exposing her students to competitions, auditions as well as examinations.
